With the blockade affecting almost all of our daily lives, it’s been hard to find a time and place to indulge ourselves with good food. Therefore, my friend and I went back to our familiar abode for the month of November as we gave in to cravings and a new taste for same old lunch everyday. But on December, we decided to try a new cafe close to both of our workplaces which I had heard from a friend long time ago.
Sun Café and Bar in Jhamsikhel is hard to miss restaurant. Nestled inside a yellow building with both outdoor and indoor settings, the restaurant doesn’t have loud board announcing its existence. The cafe is run by the same company which has been running Degaa in Kumaripati and Bhumi in Lazimpat. The two restaurants are known for Newari food. Similar is the case with Sun. The menu is full of Newari food items along with some Italian, Indian and other dishes. And just like in Bhumi, I was really caught by the interior which had traditional motifs on the walls and handmade Nepali placemats used in tables.
We ordered Spaghetti Bolognese, a cup of Hot Chocolate and Buff Sekuwa. I know that it is very weird combination of food but with the current fuel crisis going on in Nepal, these dishes were the only options for our hungry taste buds. (The cafe does serve other food items too like momo and burger.)
Compared to Spaghetti we had in other places, the one we had in Sun was surprisingly satisfying. It wasn’t too sweet and too saucy. You could actually taste the meat and the sauce was perfect. Even the portion was big compared to other places so we were both super happy with it.
Buff Sekuwa is a traditional Newari meat item made out of buffalo meat and spices. The dish at sun was bit spicy for my tongue, but it still managed to make me want more.
Since Hot Chocolate is almost same everywhere, this was no exception. I am not going to write about it.
For a last-minute food hunting, Sun Cafe and Bar proved surprisingly nice and satisfying. I know a couple of my friends who never have the same luxury so I really think I am lucky in venturing to this place. The ambience was nice with soothing music and cozy environment. Will definitely go back for more once the issue with fuel gets solved with friends or just by myself.
